Conference Tour
A visit to the Kaiserstuhl and its vineyards

Kaiserstuhl is a beautiful low mountain region in the Upper Rhine Valley near Freiburg. Its literal meaning is "emperor's chair". The name refers to King Otto III who held court in this area in 933. Later he was crowned emperor and therefore the place was called Kaiserstuhl.
It is one of the sunniest and warmest regions in Germany, having an almost Mediterranean climate. Fall is a wonderful time for visiting the Kaiserstuhl area, as the weather is still warm and sunny. Visitors are attracted by the beautiful, brightly colored leaves and the possibility to buy some of the delicious local products.
Autumn is the time when the grapes that grow in abundance are harvested. The Kaiserstuhl is one of Germany's oldest wine-growing areas. There are six winery cooperatives, thirty vineyards and more than a thousand wineries! The wine that is pressed here enjoys a great reputation in Germany as well as internationally. A tour of a local winery is undoubtedly the highlight of a visit to the Kaiserstuhl. A visit to one of the vineyards including a wine tasting will be part of the DYMAT 2012 conference tour.

The whole area is of outstanding natural beauty. It is often described as a paradise for nature lovers. Due to the warm climate, many plants and animals that are usually only found in Southern Europe can thrive and foster here. If you are lucky, you might spot a green lizard, a salamander or a praying mantis during your visit. The flora is equally impressive: the Kaiserstuhl is one of the areas with the largest variety of orchids in Europe. Over thirty species grow in the wild. There is a special orchid hiking trail that helps you to spot the beautiful flowers.
It is also a great place if you plan a hiking tour. There are several scenic hiking trails ranging from short walks to day tours. You can also explore the gentle slopes of the low mountain area and visit one of the picturesque villages.
